I had been looking at whether to do a driving course or to upgrade the cams on the MX5 to extract some more power. I had looked at the Total Car Control website but felt a bit intimidated by the photos of all the supercars! However, having telephoned and talked to you I decided to book and do the 2-day Total Control Masterclass, as I felt there was more to be gained by improving my driving with the car I had than in having more power but still not be in a position to exploit it.

I found the 2 days both very informative and fun. Your instruction style is very friendly and your reserves of patience immense!

For others reading this and considering a course, Millbrook is a fabulous facility, with numerous tracks to develop different aspects of your driving. Beware, this level of concentration is hard work and at the end of the day I was knackered! Day two, on the road, we put into practice the skills we had looked at on day one, plus more road based skills. Again, very informative and fun. The satisfaction of hitting a series of corners at speed whilst managing the weight transfer was huge, and all done in a safe and controlled manner.

The only issue I had, apart from my abject failure on the skid pan, was that I realised, as with most skills, that the more you learn you realise how much more you don’t know! For me, the cost of the course is a substantial amount of the value of my car! However, if you are serious about improving your driving, learning to exploit the performance of whatever car you own and doing it in a safe, controlled manner, you would struggle to do better than doing this course with Ivan.

I have owned my McLaren 570S Spider for around 18 months now, and for 14 of those months had been, if I am honest, fairly intimidated by it. I had owned a performance car for 4 years prior to the McLaren, but not at its level of capability. Having had a few scary moments in the previous car, I promised myself I would ‘learn’ how to drive this one properly. Helpfully, another McLaren Owners’ Club member added a comprehensive post on social media explaining that they had spent a few days with you on one of your courses and it sounded absolutely ideal for me.

My Total Control Masterclass was a fantastic three days: I learnt so much about the car, about roadcraft and also about myself! I was so impressed with the training and so impressed with the car! It has given me a much deeper understanding of what both the car and I are capable of, as well as many aspects of driver safety and awareness – both the car and I were comprehensively tested!

As a result of my time with you, I have enjoyed the last 4 months of McLaren ownership so much more that the first 14 months! I have driven much more smoothly and understood so much more about what I am looking at, the road and its conditions and what the car is telling me. I have to admit that I had doubts about whether I really wanted a car like this, and questioned my decision over whether I should have bought it. Not now!!! It was a great purchase, I just hadn’t appreciated it and had perhaps given the car too much respect?

I recently did a supercar experience day and was complimented on my smooth and fast driving, with the instructor saying he had enjoyed his laps with me. He said he could tell I had been taught! I have also recently driven my car in a charitable event and received very similar feedback from the organisers on the standard of my fast and smooth driving with particular note on my understanding of how to drive driving appropriately for visibility and road conditions. This sort of feedback, I think, reinforces the ethos of the training and I was very pleased to hear it from people who hadn’t known at the time that I had undertaken any kind of tuition.

As you predicted Ivan, my better half is also very happy as my driving has become a lot safer and smoother in her eyes! Many thanks Ivan; your hard work and patience has been worthwhile and importantly has stuck with me! I look forward to some more time together next year to progress my knowledge further, whether that be on the road or on the track.

2 very enjoyable days. I think this is almost compulsory training if you want to drive a high performance car on public roads. Positioning of the car, trail braking and safe overtaking techniques will all be very useful in everyday driving.

This was the first ‘proper’ driver training I have completed since just after passing my driving test and it was long overdue. The course delivery is well paced and works to your own pace of learning and abilities.

Before the course, I really thought that I was a good or at least above average driver, but that my new Ferrari was trying to kill me. With your analysis and coaching, I quickly realised that my driving technique left a lot to be desired, and that I really did not know how to handle the car.

I feel that the course and your numerous teaching methods and pointers have improved not only how I drive, but my whole approach to driving. I did not previously understand the physics acting upon my car, and how I influence them with my own inputs to the pedals (especially the accelerator) and steering wheel, but I certainly do now. The result is that, road permitting, I now have much greater confidence to use much more of the 488’s performance whilst retaining full control.

The wet handling sessions were not only great fun but taught me to trust the car and its amazing ESC system, now intuitively able to correct and control understeer and oversteer skids. The opportunity to turn ESC off in a safe environment was hugely worthwhile, not only to enjoy some big powerslides, but also to further appreciate ESC; I now understand what it does and why it triggers. This understanding means that I now confidently drive the car in all weather conditions (in fact, I now have even more fun if it is wet!).

The final day of the course, driving on road, was a further massive boost to my confidence. The techniques you gave me for controlling the decisions of other road users, especially in narrow road situations, work every time! In summary, I found the course to be simply crucial and fantastic. Thank you.

Owning a high powered sports car is a privilege; being able to drive it competently, a necessity. I found Ivan and his company Total Car Control totally professional at all times. They always “did what it says on the tin”. The training is way beyond just high speed driving, it really is “Total Car Control”.

The coaching is a bespoke service entirely based on the customer’s requirements. Ivan’s skill set is such that if you want it, he can provide it. At a very early stage Ivan ascertains what you want to achieve from the course. My requirement was to be totally comfortable with my car, to me a very highly powered sports car; a schoolboy dream. I had always known that to accompany the car I would want to have some advanced driver training so that I would be both safe and competent in my new car.

Having taken a three day Total Control Masterclass with Ivan I am becoming a different driver. I am more thoughtful about other drivers’ intentions, more positive in where I place my vehicle for maximum safety. I am always making sure that if an unforeseen situation occurs I have the maximum amount of time to deal with it. Having had the high speed emergency avoidance training I also now feel that if the situation arose I know what to expect.

During the masterclass that Ivan gives you will learn to drive quickly, sometimes very quickly, but ALWAYS safely. I really enjoyed it and wish I could come back for more next week. My expectations were exceeded. The techniques for safe performance driving Ivan provides are not aggressive or intrusive, but instead designed to keep us in a dynamic safety bubble on the road.

I can’t recommend Ivan or his approach to driver training highly enough. Suffice it to say that if I had children or grandchildren, the present they would get from me on passing their driving test would be – a masterclass with Ivan.

After a few years of advanced motorbike rider training, I felt that it was time to address my car handling skills with a Dynamic Handling Masterclass with Ivan. It turned out to be a much needed eye opener in regards to how easy it is to get all comfortable, protected inside your own little environment, surrounded by technology that far exceeds the majority of driving ability out there…

Take away dynamic traction/stability control and be prepared to be humbled. Then chuck in an emergency stop from high speed whilst avoiding an obstacle to appreciate an ABS management system at work! I look forward to pushing into further techniques, such as left foot braking, but had to accept that my current abilities needed refinement first. On that note I would recommend a day with Ivan to highlight where you are really at with your driving: he will no doubt leave you with plenty to work on…

A much needed eye opener in regards to how easy it is to get all comfortable, protected inside your own little environment, surrounded by technology that far exceeds the majority of driving ability out there.

I attended a single day at Millbrook back in July 2019, and then a further two-day course in November the same year; this time comprising one day at Millbrook and one on-road.

I do not have a racing background, so most of the techniques that Ivan taught me on my first day at Millbrook were new, and required that I “un-learn” several of my existing driving habits. I understood the theory, but the application was frustrating. After having thought about and having tried to apply Ivan’s techniques for a few months on my own, I then came back for a second day at Millbrook and everything started to “click”. I felt my control of the car massively improve, along with its stability and cornering ability at speed. That we were able to spend some time power-sliding was just the cherry on the cake.

The following day involved the application of many of these techniques (minus the power-sliding) on the road, and learning a way to enjoy the car safely on public roads. The course, and Ivan’s teaching techniques, have proven as rewarding as I was hoping for, and I would not hesitate to recommend his course to anyone who wishes to truly enjoy their sportscar.
